What Should I Do During a Dental Emergency?
If you’re facing a dental emergency, the most important thing is to call our office right away. The sooner you reach out, the sooner we can help. Take a deep breath and know that you’re in good hands. Our team is trained to guide you through every step, even before you arrive.
First Steps:
- Call Tampa Dental Wellness of Carrollwood as soon as possible
- Describe your symptoms clearly
- Follow any advice our team gives you over the phone
- Stay as calm as you can while you wait for your appointment
Dr. Anand says, “Most people kind of freak out. You’re like, ‘What do I do? What do you do?’ So, just call us. Get us on the phone. I’m always happy to talk on the phone to patients and guide them as to what’s happening, and of course, keeping our doors open for those kinds of patients, too.” Our emergency dentistry services are here for you, whether you’re in Carrollwood, Tampa, or a nearby community.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation where you’re in pain, have swelling or have experienced trauma to your teeth or gums. If something feels urgent or is making you anxious, don’t hesitate to call. It’s always better to ask.
Common emergencies include:
- Severe tooth pain that won’t go away
- Swelling in your gums, face or jaw
- A broken or chipped tooth, especially if it’s in the front
- A tooth that’s been knocked out or pushed out of place
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop
Dr. Anand explains, “We do provide emergency dental care. Whether it’s pain or you chipped a front tooth, we are here for you. We provide extractions and implant services as well as aesthetic services. We want to provide that. Life continues even if we have a dental emergency and we’re here for our patients for that.”
What Should I Do If My Tooth Gets Knocked Out?
If a tooth is completely knocked out, act quickly. Pick up your tooth by the crown (the part you chew with), not the root. Rinse it gently if needed, but don’t scrub or remove any tissue. Dr. Anand recommends, “Put it in a glass of milk, or you can even put it in your cheek and store it in your saliva while you’re getting to the dentist. That’s probably the best thing to do.”
If the tooth is just pushed out of position, you can try to gently move it back, or come straight to us and we’ll help align and secure it. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if you get to the dentist within 30 to 60 minutes. Quick action can make all the difference.
Can a Chipped or Broken Tooth Be Fixed Quickly?
Yes, many chipped or broken teeth can be repaired the same day, especially if the damage is visible or causing pain. We know how important your smile is, especially before travel, big events or important meetings.
Small chips can often be smoothed or bonded quickly, while larger breaks may need more involved treatment, but relief is our first goal. If you’re in pain, we’ll address that right away.
The Carrollwood community regularly tells us how grateful they are for fast, cosmetic repairs. One emergency patient recalled, “I broke my front tooth the day before a big interview. Dr. Anand made it look like nothing ever happened.”
How Quickly Can I Be Seen for an Emergency?
We strive to see emergency patients within 24 hours, often the same day. Dr. Anand explains, “We’re really lucky here. Our front team is very well informed about dental care and dental health care. A lot of our front team members used to be dental assistants or hygienists or have some sort of dental background. So, they’re really good at triaging over the phone, asking the right questions and putting you on our calendar or on our schedule where it’s most helpful and easy and convenient for everyone.” Our highly skilled team is often the fastest way to get you help.
Call as soon as you notice a problem. The friendly voice that answers will ask key questions to assess urgency, and we’ll do everything possible to see you within a day. Whether you’re in Carrollwood, Tampa, or a nearby community, you can count on us for prompt, compassionate care during a dental emergency.
Why Getting Out of Pain Comes First
When you’re hurting, it’s hard to think about anything else. Our first priority is always to relieve your pain and help you feel comfortable. Only then do we discuss next steps and long-term solutions. Dr. Anand says, “When a patient comes in really uncomfortable, it’s hard to make any decision if something is hurting, so the first thing to do is just make sure they’re out of pain and then move forward from there.”
We listen to your concerns and symptoms because your voice matters. Once you’re comfortable, we explain your options and plan the best path forward. Many patients have told us that just walking through our doors made them feel better. Our team’s calm approach and clear communication can help turn a stressful emergency into a manageable situation.
